What I thought:

[This isn't going to be a long review. I went into the book with no idea what it was about and loved it that way. No spoilers ahead, just some words of admiration.]

This was an absolutely phenomenal book! I thought it would just be another cutesy contemporary, but this was filled with adventure, love, humor, and a little bit of mystery. It was just so enjoyable to read! (I ended up reading 93% of it in one sitting, and it isn’t a short book!)

Morgan Matson did a fantastic job of fleshing out each character, even the ones who only had a few lines. I was completely immersed in the story, and I never wanted it to end! The list was the perfect catalyst for the plot; the story never felt boring or predictable. I loved how each challenge happened in an elusive way, leaving the reader begging for more!

This novel was incredibly adorable and unique in a manner I would have never guessed. It was modern, funny, and entertaining. I will definitely be recommending this book to all my friends ASAP. Also, maybe I’ll try writing some of my own lists. ;)

P.S. I tweeted about being hooked on this novel, and Morgan Matson favorited my tweet! #fangirling!!!!

Soft Purple (FOTD)

First off, apologies for being MIA for 2 weeks! I sent my laptop to get repaired, and they took well over the appropriate time to get it back to me. It was quite the struggle without my laptop. But I’m back now and ready to blog!

I’ve always heard that purple brings out the green in my eyes, so I try to wear lavenders as much as possible. However, it’s not necessarily a neutral, so it’s harder to work in often. This was my attempt at a light purple eye look. I actually really love how it turned out! It was super flattering and easy to pull off! I also got to use my Tarte palette that I’ve been ignoring lately, even though it’s of great quality.

So let’s get into it!

Tarte Bow-to-Go Palette
Physicians Formula Shimmer Palette for Green Eyes
Wet n Wild Eyeshadow Single in Panther
Milani Eye Tech Mini in Black
CoverGirl Clump Crusher in Black
Maybelline Color Elixir in Blush Essence

1. After priming my eyes, I used the lavender color from the shimmer strips and applied it all over my lid. I then deepened it up the crease using the cool medium toned purple in the rightmost row on the Tarte palette.

2. I then used a more precise blending brush to apply the deep plum from the top row of the Tarte palette to the outer V of my crease and lid. I blended a lot to make sure the purples created a smooth gradient on my eye lid.

3. I also brought that plum shade under my lower lash line for further definition.

4. I used the shimmery white from the shimmer strips to highlight my inner corner as well.

5. I then lined my eyes with the Milani liquid liner. I also used an angled brush and the black Wet n Wild shadow on top of it to smudge the line slightly and soften the look. I also brought a little bit of the black eyeshadow under the outer third of my lower lash line.

6. I finished with a generous coat of lengthening mascara and a light pink gloss on the lips.

So that’s the look! I really like the finished product. It’s light, flattering, and the perfect amount of color for the summer!

The Lovely Bones – Bookish Thoughts

The Lovely Bones
By Alice Sebold

Rate: 2 / 5 stars

What It’s About: A young teenage girl gets murdered in her own backyard. She watches from heaven as her friends and family struggle to live on without her.

What I Thought:

Okay, so I went into this book with some high expectations, and that might have tainted this reading experience for me. All the blurbs on the cover claimed it would be a reading experience like no other, but I just ended up bored to tears.

This book was so. Freaking. Slow. It definitely caught my attention within the first few pages with the general idea, but the pacing of this novel is really imbalanced. It took me an excruciating three months to finish it because of this. Some sections picked up with the action, but I found myself not caring about any of the characters, or the story at all. That’s not what a book’s supposed to do.

The ending is what really threw me off. The whole book has a fantasy feel with the narrator being dead and looking down from her heaven, but the last 30 pages was too much. It got weird and honestly made me uncomfortable. It shook me out of the book even further, and it took way too long for me to get past a handful of pages. The worst part, however, has got to be the epilogue. There was no wrap up to the novel! None what so ever! The guy I wanted to know most about was killed off last second in the lamest way possible.

None of the characters got any kind of closure; actually, none of the characters had any kind of growth at all. The relationships between them were shallow and incredibly uninteresting. The only exchanges that I enjoyed were between two of the “side” characters, Ruth and Ray. The reader barely gets any insight into Ruth’s life, but at the end she becomes really important for a couple of pages, (well sorta, like I said it gets weird) and then is forgotten soon after.

This review is a jumbled mess, because the book made no sense, and it was terribly formulated. The writing was actually quite nice, but that doesn’t make up for the plot or the characters or anything else that makes a good book. I’m just dumbfounded by how so many people praise this book. It’s giving me a headache to even think about.

I apologize for the disaster that is this review, but bottom line: this book isn’t worth the time. Unless you read it blank-mindedly and try not to actually think about what you’re ingesting.

Golden Glimmers

I love wearing warm golden and copper shades all year round, but when the warmer months come it becomes an obsession. People talk about rocking pops of color on their eyes, but I can’t get enough of these radiant neutrals! I’ve compiled a few of my current favorite golden eye products. They’re all drugstore except for the shade in the Naked 3 palette, and all the products I chose are of high quality and pigmentation.

Urban Decay – Trick from the Naked 3 Palette
A beautiful rose gold.

Loreal Infallible Eyeshadow – Eternal Sunshine
Light gold packed pigment with a metallic finish.

Maybelline Color Tattoo Bad to the Bronze

Maybelline Color Tattoo – Bad to the Bronze
Bronzey gold cream shadow. Super long-wearing!

Covergirl Shineshadow – Copper Fling
Metallic copper cream shadow.

Maybelline Eyestudio Quad – Copper Chic
Warm toned neutral quad. Two middle shades are gorgeous!

Wet n Wild Color Icon Trio – I’m Getting Sunburned
Great Summer trio! The last shade is the perfect true gold.

Wet n Wild Color Icon Palette – Comfort Zone
Left column, second shadow is a beautiful warm peachy champagne shade.

Swatch Time!

Naked 3 Trick – Loreal Eternal Sunshine – Maybelline Bad to the Bronze – Covergirl Copper Fling
Maybelline Quad Copper Chic (2 shades) – Wet n Wild I’m Getting Sunburned – Wet n Wild Comfort Zone

So there is a selection of my favorite golden neutrals. I love the look of a warm shimmery shade swiped across the lids with a good coating of mascara. It’s easy and simply beautiful!

I’m forever on the look for more stunning golden, copper, or champagne shades. I know the Loreal Infallibles have a rose gold shade called Amber Rush, but it’s always sold out! As I’m hunting for that, are they any other products I should keep my eye out for?

Blog Appearance Update!!

If you’ve been with me for a bit, you’ve probably noticed the new layout! It’s nothing extravagant in any way, but I love how classic it turned out. The banner is definitely my favorite part. I love how the pastel colors look with the black accents.

I also added pages to my menu bar so ya’ll can access my different categorized posts easily! I have some linked buttons in my sidebar as well so ya’ll can follow me on some social media sites. I’m thinking of setting up a facebook page for my blog (it seems like the next thing to do), and if I do that I’ll add it on. Currently I have my twitter, tumblr, and instagram linked. So follow me if you’d like!

I’m just gonna keep the posts coming! Right now I’ve fallen into the routine of Makeup Monday and then a fashion post later in the week. I like that, but I can’t guarantee that I’ll be sticking to it. I’m going with the flow this summer, remember?

Anyway that’s it for this update. Thanks for reading!

P.S. New signature, eh? :D

Almay Liquid Lip Balm (Review)

I’m not a huge Almay fan; this is actually the only product I own from them. However, I heard some gal on youtube talking about these, and one day I decided to try one of these “liquid lip balms.” Then a few months later I somehow found myself with almost the entire collection. I have 8 shades total, and I believe there are 10 total. I only have 7 shades swatched here though; the other one got lost in the depths of my backpack.

Now let’s get down to it.

They’re all creamy finishes with decent pigmentation; obviously some shades are more vibrant than others when on the lips. They have the perfect amount of shine for me! Just enough to make my lips look pout-y and plump. Also, they have a sweet vanilla/cupcakey smell that I find delightful, but it might bother others. The wear time is pretty average for a gloss: probably around 2-3 hours depending on the shade and what your mouth is up to. Some of the shades do have a light staining effect as well.

As for the liquid lip balm claim? These are pretty moisturizing; they feel fantastic on the lips. They don’t dry out my lips as they fade, which is a huge plus. The label says its “color + care” and although they feel comfortable, I wouldn’t say they’re doing anything for my lips. I’m not complaining, though, these look and feel really good.

Lip Swatches:

1.2 1.1

Blooming Balm

- A light neutral pink. This was the first one I ever bought. Although it isn’t very exciting, I wear this one so often. It’s the perfect topper for a huge spectrum of pinks, because it’s pigmentation isn’t overwhelming. I also like this shade for a more natural, easy look.

3.2 3.1

Cantaloupe Cream

- Very light orange. This shade has very little pigmentation, but I like using it over corals to make them a little more orangey/peachy. This line doesn’t really have a true coral: probably one of it’s main cons.

2.2 2.1

Lilac Love

- This is one of my favorite shades. It’s light but the color is definitely there. I am totally digging the light purple-pink shades for this spring and summer. This is a fool proof way to rock the color!

4.2 4.1

Apricot Pucker

- Medium orange. This shade is basically just a darker version of Cantaloupe Cream. Since this shade isn’t fully opaque, it layers with the natural color of my lips and creates a really pretty coral color. I actually really like how this looks!

5.2 5.1

Apple a Day

- Sheer, true red. I love wearing this when I want a red lip, but I don’t want to fully commit to a full punch lipstick. This was the shade I had wanted to try in the first place and had to hunt down for quite a while. I definitely recommend this one! This shade also stains the lips, and the color lasts even after the shine wears off.

6.2 6.1

Pink Pout

- A medium raspberry pink. I like this shade, but it’s nothing outstanding. I like this for a nice wash of color, though, and it does the job for a nice pink lip.

7.1 7.2

Just Plum Good

- A medium purpley pink. Although this gloss looks a little intimidating in the tube, the color sheers out perfectly on the lips for a pop of purple. The shade is still vibrant, but in a subtle, wearable way. This was one of my go to’s for the winter months, and I’ll continue to rock it into the warmer weather.

Hand Swatches

Blooming Balm – Cantaloupe Cream – Lilac Love – Apricot Pucker – Apple a Day – Pink Pout – Just Plum Good

Bottom line: these are pretty good glosses. There’s nothing about them that is super spectacular, but they smell good, look good, and are easy to wear. These are great beginner glosses as well! These will definitely remain a staple product in my makeup cycle.

What’s your favorite summer gloss?

xoxo Gigi.

P.S. How is it possible that the bottom half of my face can look so different just with slight shifts of the camera angle? Looking at all those close up lip swatches is messing with me.

Kendra’s Fashion Challenge!

kendra fashion challenge banner

Hey guys! Last week I was contacted by Kendra to participate in her fashion challenge! She’s going on a romantic getaway to Miami with her husband, and she wanted some fashion inspiration.

Here’s what she said it’s all about:

“My husband is taking me to Miami on a romantic getaway. It will be just the two of us on this special vacation. There are many things that I want to do, but what I need is outfits and accessories that will fit in perfectly with our stay in Miami. That is why I created Kendra’s Fashion Challenge. The outfits that I want to be wearing can be trendy and simply amazing. While in Miami, we will be bringing our digital camera in order to take numerous photos of our adventures. It is my desire to look back on those photos and see in me a timeless and chic style. We will be staying at the marvelous Biltmore Miami Coral Gables Estate. gogobot is where we learned about this historic hotel. This site has a large amount of real testimony reviews on hotels and many activities that guests can do. Not only that, but we learned about the venues that Miami has to offer. The Biltmore is a fascinating place with a wonderous history and classy look. When my husband and I arrive at the Biltmore Miami Coral Gables Estates, we will be staying at the suite that is known as the Everglades. I really like the open design. Not only that, but the lighting is tremendous. It has a dining room table, a baby grand piano, a desk, a kitchen and a private elevator. I was stunned to learn that Al Capone once stayed here. These accommodations are truly exciting. When it is time for a romantic dinner, the Biltmore Miami Coral Gable Estates has a fantastic restaurant we will be visiting, and that is the Palme d’or. This French restaurant has limited hours, but memorable food. I look and feel my best when I am wearing outfits that are ideal every occasion. It is awesome to have a cute outfit with matching accessories when the two of us do something together. I want to look stunning whether we are having a fancy dinner together or having a shopping adventure.  I am at my best when I am confident with the clothes I wear! “

She gave me details on what she’ll be up to during her stay, and I came up with two easy breezy outfits: a day look and a night look.

Day Look:

day look

Dress: Forever 21+
Hat: Forever 21
Shoes: Modcloth
Necklace: Michael Kors
Midi Ring: Maria Black
Bag: Forever 21
Cuff: Nine West
Lipstick: MAC Sweet Experience

A plus size friendly option! I knew I wanted to do a bright and fun maxi dress for my day look. I actually don’t own any maxi dresses, because finding one that’s long enough for me is quite the challenge. I love the colors of this dress, and I decided to pair it with gold and rose gold accessories. I love how shades of gold work with peach shades for a light summery look.

Night Look:

night look

Dress: Topshop
Shoes: Topshop
Necklace: Overstock
Bangle: YOOX
Lipstick: Too Faced Melted Peony

I love lacy dresses for romantic nights out. Also, the navy blue looks so good against tanned skin, which I’m sure she’ll have plenty of in Miami! I went with simple but unique silver accessories to compliment the dress and my choice of a bold lip. I love these new Too Faced Melted lipsticks, and the coral-y pink shade pops against the deep blue.

So there it is! Two classic, flattering, and easy to wear pieces for a romantic getaway with a loved one!

Which is your favorite?

xoxo Gigi.
